Found these in attic....

I found this set of cuffs that belonged to my great grandfather who was a police officer in the City of Toronto in the late 1800's to early 1900's. They are double-locking and are in working order. Any idea who the manufacturer is ??? The only markings on either cuff is the one in the close-up ! Cheers... Rx

Tower (brand) handcuffs with original key, a nice find. don't clean them, just give them a rub down with a cloth and some oil. one drop in each keyhole and then operate the key. they should last another hundred years.

In the early days of the force, British darby cuffs were the norm. Eventually, the Tower Double Lock became regulation for the force.

The Metropolitan Toronto Police Museum has a variety of cuffs used by the force including numerous Tower cuffs stamped TPF.

They even have some Tower Double Lock "3 Hand" models used when transporting prisoners to and from court.

Also, even up into the 1960's, Tower Double Locking leg irons were used by both the TPF and Toronto's, "Old Don Jail", for prisoner transport.

Like I said ....I have no other documentation for him !! I do know he was one of 10 or so rotating "John Ellises" that performed hangmans duties in front of Old City Hall ...before they moved those spectacles to the Don Jail ( I think they got like an extra $2 a week for that extra "service" ...LoL ??)

If I wanted to get a spare key .....are there originals or aftermarket ones available online ??

Actually,

The hangman "John Ellis" had a real name. It was Arthur English.

And all of the hangings he did in Toronto were at the Old Don Jail.

There was only ever one John Ellis.

Dude...they used to hang folk outside in broad daylight....public display in front of Old City Hall...pre-1900..on a semi-regular basis..

Why do I know this ?
