Toy darby

Hi i picked up a pair of darby toy cuffs at a toy fair last week and had to get them as i have never seen any like them before. They say scotland yard patn on both cuffs and the end caps have like a set of wings with a eye in the middle and cds. You push the end cap in to unlock them. Sorry cant put pictures i do not know how to upload them anymore but just wanted to know if anyone has a pair or knows of them when and where they are from. Thanks martin

I have the same pair, Martin. A pic will be coming soon. I dont know anything more than you do on their original or time of manufacturing. I got mine from an Ebay seller on EBAY a while back. Pretty neat little piece to add to the collection.

I have won a pair with the Scotland Yard marking on. Do you still have a picture of yours? The ones I have won have an external plunger button, but I have also seen ones that have a more recessed button that seemingly have 2 clicks for perhaps increasing the tightness. Any idea if one is older than the other? I did not realise there were different toy versions of the Darby.

If the order is the same as I see it here, the top pair with the external plunger will be the ones I am waiting for, the other below is another random one I saw on ebay.

I actually have one of each style in my collection. The one with the recessed button and the other with the external plunger. Both, just have the one locking tooth. No adjustability. As far as age, im not quite sure when exactly they were made and which style was made first? Both sets of mine say "Scottland Yard" on them. The one that has the recessed plunger, can also be opened by using the supplied key. The key hole is in the side of the lock tube. Hope that helps!

Nichols book says 1960 ish for them, but does not cover both models. It shows the external plunger type and suggests they were from a cereal box type of thing. So I'd say it's fair to say the external plunger ones are around 1960 but I have no idea about the more recessed one. I did notice the external plunger one has a <= 1916 style design whereas the recessed one has bows that look like 1930+ style where the back of the shackle has a flatness to it. I am hoping the ones I am waiting on will be nice quality and worthy of being in my alternative collection.
