Judd Three ways

Well, wouldn't you know it. After working out in the trees all day yesterday (it's that time of year here in the mountains of California), I fell sound asleep in front of the TV after dinner. And missed the end of the auction. I was going to snipe Mark to another planet. Maybe even go a couple hundred. Oh well, at least I have an excuse.

Mark congrats. Hope you'll bring them to the next show for us to all oogle.

I am glad that you were attending to your arboreal duties and got your well deserved 40 winks. I was already sniped to kingdom come so your bid would have been the salt in the wound.
May I suggest relocating closer down to the coast and planting Palm trees? They need no trimming and pretty much take care of themselves.

I would be happy to bring the cuffs to the show, but they are so common in their regular state that it would not be to hard to imagine what they look like. I figure that it is a couple hundred dollars worth of Judd cuffs on a $600 ring. Oh well, just had to have it.

Yep, you're just lucky - I was ready to quadruple my $27 bid. Seriously, I would love to have them, but knew how it was going to go, whether you were in or out. And it did.

Good point on the cuffs, I probably won't pay any attention to the cuffs, themselves, at all. All my time would be spent looking at that ring that holds them together. How funny is that.

I mentioned before that I have a Maltby three way. The ring is the one thing about them that is the same as the Judds.

I guess a round ring is just a good design, hard to improve upon.

I think the last time I paid $600 for a ring, it was gold and had diamonds and the birthstones of my wife and kids set into it. Then again, it did not come with a set of 3 bracelets.

Well, I'm still glad you got it, so I can see it.

Maybe you, Joe and I can wear it out to the bar for a drink in the evening. We could charge admission for that one (none of escape artists).

Hey... maybe we 3 can put the cuffs on at the convention and go to the Sunday brunch all for the price of 1!

These babies came today. I had an extra original key and it works well on all 3 cuffs. The ratchet detents all work and will release when the bow is pulled back. The ring is larger than I thought it would be, but it looks original to me and the patina seems to be equal to the cuffs.
A nice addition to my collection. Now I will try to find the matching Triple leg iron!

Hi.
After comparing my new 3 handed Judds with my regular pair, I noticed a very interesting difference. The regular Judds have a clevis which is similar to the Towers. The 3 handed version has a much shorter clevis with a swivel attached to the ring. The Maltby cuffs have this same swivel clevis.
At first I was concerned that these could have been faked by someone who took 3 Judd cuffs and stuck them on a ring. The ring looks perfect and has the same patina as the rest of the cuffs, but could have been faked. Now that I realize that each cuff has swivels, I am much more confident that these are the real thing and am more comfortable with the price that I had to pay for them.
Has anyone seen a Judd or a Mattatuck with a swivel clevis? I wonder if a belly chain or transport chain has the same swivel.

I have a regular Judd with the tower 3 round links and the Tower style clevis. My DOJ Judd has a single link and the other clevis, like on your 3 handed cuff. I remember discussing the clevis issue very recently on the forum, and Gordon has a DOJ with 3 rings and the Tower clevis.

All of my non-Maltby Mattatuck stuff is the "Tower" style with three rings and all Maltbys are the swivel loop clevis with a single long link, so I don't have any news to add.

After you posted, I ran to eBay to look at the pics again, but they were down. I never noticed the clevis assemblies. If you get a chance Mark, would you post a pic here? Thanks.

Frankly, I think when a guy gets a new ring he SHOULD be all a twitter with it. Congrats.

As long as you are talking variations in linkage, I have one more to add.
I have a Judd with a Maltby linkage. It looks good. When I see a different
then usual linkage on a cuff I no longer think "wow a cool variation". I now
think that the original linkage was cut and replaced with whatever. The
exception might be with what the Mattatuck co. put out with all their variations of the Maltbys.
