New cuffs broke

Just got a pair of S&W 1850 transports and one of the handcuffs locked up. I tried them a few times as i always do when i get new cuffs and besides being a bit stiff they worked fine. But ofcourse as soon as they are put on the one cuff would not unlock the double lock. Tried 3 different keys with no luck. Tapped on the body of the cuff and no luck. Gave the key some extra effort and felt it slip over the double lock bar which got the key stuck and couldnt be removed. Had to use the bolt cutters to remove them. :( Have any of you guys noticed the new Smith and Wessons have any issues or did i get a lemon. They were model 1's btw .

Well, this thread doesn't seem to be getting much attention but i gotta post about the replacement cuffs i got back. The fit and finish on these are worse than the first pair. There are burrs on several spots of the teeth that are causing the bow to stick. The finish looks like crap. If i didn't just the place i bought them from I'd swear they wear used. Smith and wesson has really dropped the ball on the quality of there product. These will be the last pair of s&w cuffs i buy for a long time, well, new ones that is. Can't believe how bad these are. I'm just hoping they don't break like the other ones.

If you have the opportunity to disassemble the broken cuffs and make photos of broken lock it would be interesting to see what happened

I sent them back and got a new set sent back to me. Have no idea what happened to them but the way both sets were, im sure it was a burr of some sort that caused the issue. I dont think s&w know what a file is anymore.

I would have sprayed some WD40 Specialist: Fast Release and hope it would have freed up the mechanism. I have not experienced this but I think if the double locking bar is rough like it was not well machined, the friction could have made it get stuck. I find it odd that the key slipped though. Smith & Wesson keys's key flags are pretty lengthy and reach decently inside. I have heard of wrong (short key flag) keys slipping during single lock disengaing and getting stuck inside the mechanism, at which point they need a wrench to snap the key flag with turning, pull the key out and use a better key.

If the key is stuck inside of the cuff when it is only on single lock and not on someone's wrist, you can often free the key, without breaking anything. Try to push the cuff arm all of the way through. Take a small screwdriver or something similar and compress the pawl and hold it down. While holding the pawl down, turn the key counterclockwise. It should slip past the pawl and return to the flag to the slot for removal. This works with many of the problem cuffs that need a key with just a tad bit larger or longer key flag.
