Klog-Spike

I just added a clog-spike to my collection.  The information I have is they were made by Union Hardware Co., Torrington, Connecticut probably in the early 1900's.  The inside diameter is 4 inches which made me wonder if they were made is other sizes to accommodate other leg sizes.  They are very well made.

Both Union Hardware and Tower & Lyon catalogs list Spike Clog Shackles. The 1897 T&L catalog does not include them, so they were likely not available prior to that year. A circa 1904 T&L catalog does list them. They appear to have been made in one size only, but could be purchased with or without a Scandinavian padlock. A 1912 Union Hardware catalog contains them (same exact ad as T&L catalog.  A Union Hardware catalog #2 circa 1925 also lists them.

Thanks Matt.  Interesting that they offered a padlock, so the one that came with this could be original however, the key is a replacement.  Also thanks for the correct spelling. I just used what the seller used.

Ron......I just measured mine and while the opening appears round in actuality it is slightly oval in shape. At the widest it is 4.25 inches and about 3.75 inches at the narrowest and I think there was only one size made. For reason I thought they were a Union Hardware iron but I guess they predate that but still might be Tower product.

Just remeasured mine and they are 4" except the hinge to the opening diameter is 3 7/8" due to the hinge being slightly inside  the leg area.

My Clog Spike is like the ones shown in your posts, Except the lower part of the Clog Spike where you put the lock in bent but not broken . Do you know if it can be forged together? I am probably wrong but I have been
Lead to believe it is made out of cast iron. Do you know of any that have been repaired ? Always enjoy your posts. With Respect for your knowledge.

About 15 years ago Carol and I were touring the South for no particular reason, it was just fun. Several antique stores we went through had these for sale. One must have had ten of them hanging on the wall. I never bought any of them, just figured, “ah, they must be junk.” Not one of my brighter deductions.

I’ve never seen any out west here and for all of our time in New England I never saw any there. Guess the South is where they saw the most use.

I always thought maybe they were a slavery item, but Matt’s info disproves that.

How do these work im guessing on weight becuse surly of its just the bar being in the way then it could just be span that the ba points forward and back. Cheers
