#7Patent # 885811 has a Patent date of April 28, 1908.
Patent applied for on Mar. 28 1907.
The Patent date of Dec. 27, 1904 appears 3 times on the item above.
This leads me to believe that the 1908 Patent may be a 2nd or improved model.
I am curious if the 1904 date matches with examples in other collections.

#8After reviewing some patent drawings, I found that A.L Nelson had patented a very similar nipper which was patented on Dec. 27, 1904.
That is the exact same date as the B.L. Ward Nipper. There has to be some connection between the Nelson and the Ward.
Visually, the greatest difference is the unlocking tab on the Ward which is on top and secured by the officers grip versus the unlock tab (18) in the center of the Nelson.
The Ward handle is stronger as well.

#9Here is a Nelson that sold for just over $1,500 in Feb 2019 I is very close to the Ward except for the release which is lower on the Nelson.
I wonder why the patent office issued a patent to the later model when these two models are almost identical.

#10There is indeed a connection between Axel L. Nelson and Bernard L. Ward. The first is that they both resided in Ottumwa, Iowa when they applied for their patents. The second, and more important one is that In Ward's patent he states, "My present invention relates to manacles, and more particularly to an improved means for locking and releasing the clamp members of such a device; this invention being an improvement on the device shown in Letters Patent No. 778,761, issued December 27, 1904, to Axel L. Nelson, the entire right to which invention and Letters Patent are now owned by me."
