#2MMD, your photos appear to be a S&W Model 90.
No such S&W M-92.
I don't have good lighting at this time, but try to show you the finish difference between a S&W M-90 (regular nickel finish) & a S&W M-91 (polished nickel finish).

#5These are the detent location variations that I have on my Model 90's.
Agree the early M-90's have the indent closer to the center. My lowest serial number on the early S&W Handcuff, prior to attaching the Model 90 designations in 1958, is serial number 591.

#7Early or later model only refers to the approx dates the cuffs were made. The center detent versions, being made before the other other two detent versions. Yours is a later model, as in, it was made later in the run of the Model 90. Probably 1970s. Yours are marked, Springfield, Mass. So they would have been made before Smith & Wesson, mover their factory to Houlton, Me. "Early" meaning it was made early in the manufacturing run of the cuff and "later" model meaning it was made later in the run.

#8MMD,
Yours is a later production of the model 90. The indent under the keyway would be closer to the center if it was an early model 90.
My early production Model 90's begin with serial number 591 and go to serial number 15665.
My later production Model 90's begin with serial number 117922 and go through serial number 947661.
Attached is photos of serial number 591. Again, the lighting I have to take a photo is bad right now, so sorry for the bad photos.

#10They never really referred to them as Version 1 or version 2, etc. Ive always seen them listed as early, middle and late models. Yours would technically be version #3 (late model). The slightly over center detent above the keyhole would be version 2 and the closer to center of the cuff body detent would be version 1, i suppose.

#13Model 90 isnt a very rare cuff. Yours do look to be in good shape. The ones I have sold on Ebay have brought anywhere for $20 to $45. The $45 ones were an early version. Ones like yours are listed quite often. Do a search on Model 90 Smith and Wesson handcuffs and go through the sold listings. Ones with an original box, will grab a bit more money.

#14Does anyone know the production dates for the early, mid and late S&W Model 90 cuffs?
djhalfdead
#15According to Smith and Wesson Restraints Book by David Teeters, it doesnt give a date for when the later production Model 90s started. The Model 90 cuffs, in general, started in 1952 and ran until 1979. In 1979, when they moved production to the factory in Houlton, Me. In the latter part of 1979, the Model 100 was introduced. So, I would think we would be safe to say that the Later production run of the Model 90, would have been started in the 1970s.

#16Thank you, Richard. So the Model 90 ran from 1952 to 1979. What I'd like to know is when did the production of the early (1952) model end and production of the mid model start/end?

#17That, I dont have an answer for. The book is as detailed as I would have hoped it would be. Fingers are crossed that someone else has some information to share.

#18Unlike the Peerless Handcuff Company, Smith & Wesson did not track serial numbers on their handcuffs like they did on their handguns.
The best calculation I can give you, is from examples in my collection, that I quickly looked at.
In 1965 the Wesson family sold its controlling interest to Bangor Punta.
I have a Model 90 with the "early detent", serial number 15665, New In a S&W Bangor Punta box with the hash border.
The next number I located was serial number 117922 with the "late detent" NIB.
So the later detent must have started sometime after Bangor Punta acquired S&W in 1965.
This is a place to start and compare.
The offset detent, which some refer to as "mid version" is something I included with the late examples. I have them mixed in with the late versions I have.

#19Hi. Does anyone know if the 90’s only came with the PP double lock? Or was the newer style double lock available on them like the 100’s come with?

#20I'm pretty sure they don't have the slide double lock... Think model 100 is the first model with this double lock.

#21The slot, double lock system, did not begin until the Model 100 was introduced. The Model 100 patent pending version 1, had the double lock slot on the front side of the cuff only. The Model 100 patent pending version 2, had the double lock slot on bot sides.
