eBay Internet Taxes

I just made a purchase on eBay and when I went to pay for it a tax was added to the sale.  As it turns out Arizona was added to the list the first of month.  I called eBay and there are several other States that are collecting taxes.  There is no mention of the tax until you checkout and then you see the added tax.  Talking to eBay they are not to blame for this added tax and they sent me a link for the Arizona law.  

The real problem is that small sellers with limited business income in the State can be exempt, but there is no information on how to establish you're income in the sellers State.  Here is the link for the Arizona law:     https://azdor.gov/news-events-notices/n ... -october-1

eBay is fighting this and for now they have lost a customer.  You should check your states law or call eBay to see if you're Sate is on the list.

Yeah, I noticed that kicked in with my State on ebay too.
It's not like I won't be using ebay anymore, but the situation has made me pass up a few purchases already.
Ebay simply has items on it that I wind up desiring, and if the overall price, (including the tax & shipping), is still a good deal, I bite. But, sometimes the cost of shipping & the new tax add up to a not so good of a deal.
I imagine this whole thing is great for the State's in getting more revenue, but it actually may cause a drop in overall sales on ebay from the States having added these new tax rules.

I'll probably offer my cuffs on here from now on. The problem is still buying - getting slugged at every turn. Why we pay taxes on secondhand goods is beyond me.

even if it is not eBay's fault it is there fault for not saying tax's added on those items from those  states !

Something I hate about the taxes...from my German point of view :
Unlike in the US we expect to pay the amount a label says.
If I go into a store and something says 10 Euro then I am paying 10 Euro.
And it's not like at the checkout they'll say "10 + 80 Cents taxes"
I VERY MUCH hate the idea of my clients buying something from me for amount X and then beeing told at the checkout (usually Paypal) that it's x+taxes.
If I were the client (any maybe not knowing better) I'd expect some kind of fraud there.
And I'd let the seller know.
Might of course be different for anyone from the US who knows this system of having to pay more than what the label says.

Well, who likes taxes. But think of it this way: our laws make the sellers bury (or hide) the tax in the total. At least if it's added afterwards, you realize how much tax you're paying every time you make a purchase. If that's the way it's always done, you get used to it. I used to live in Northern Virginia, and if I remember correctly, Maryland had a different tax system like the one you mentioned. 

Let's give an honorable mention to our customs department, who charges customs on the item's value AND the shipping costs, even though that's actually illegal.

I would not think this new sales tax could possibly be applied to purchases outside of the states but I know our government hates when we get goodies in the mail and they don't have their greedy hands in it somehow.

Just bought something from China, 2 days ago on Ebay. Yes, taxes were added to the total, i was charged. Personally, i cant see why they should be able to tax used items being sold. I can see taxes on something that is new. But, if it is sold as used, then the original purchaser has already paid taxes for the item. Now, it gets taxed every time it is re-sold? That just seems like it should be illegal, but im sure it isnt. Sigh...

They do.
As a example...been looking at some recent sales and found one going to Akron, OH 44303
Amount for two items was $330.
Tax added by eBay was $22,28.
Total payed by the client was $352,28.
From those the $22,28 were deducted.
As were $16,12 Paypal fees.
So in the end $313,88 arrived here.

Those taxes seem to be depending on the US state the goods are sold to.
And (at least for the moment) they seem to be charged by eBay.
So when I am selling something via my website or alike then there are no taxes charged.

Well, most Chinese sellers won't care about your local taxes when you buy an item online, unless they have to. At some point, that will put local retailers at a significant disadvantage. So probably, after shopping malls going out of business, next it'll be online stores, because everyone will be ordering directly from China. 
Usually, it depends whether you're a private or a commerical seller over here on the bay. There is usually no tax on used items, I don't know how or if that affects professional antique dealers, though.
