Cuff of the Day for April 11. Combinations.

This is the Cuff of the Day stream.  The theme of the day is combination cuffs, often a pair of handcuffs with attached leg irons.
But there are other combinations out there.  Let us see what we can find.

I will start with the Bean neck collar, which is a pair of normal Bean handcuffs attached to a large neck size Bean cuff.  
It is pretty rare with a relatively few known pairs.

I only have one real combination, this set of Mühlenfeld handcuffs and leg irons I posted before.

If we stretch the meaning of "combination", I can add one prison belt with Hiatt backstraps and the two versions of Pratt's (pat 1916 and 1932). The later are a combination of a nippers and handcuffs.

Here is my Clejuso combination.

A Bean neck collar combination and a Mühlenfeld combination. What a way to start the day.

First one is one of my favorites: a heavy combination bar cuff with  cup leg irons. The set is around 22 pounds. Supposedly from castle Gladz (?) in Poland. ( I know if 2-3 more sets of this type).
Second is a handcuff with a very thin chain and leg irons (from Austria).

Nils, I really like your heavy bar combination, it's excellent!

When I went down to our basement supply I found some more combinations. As they are very similar, I'm only posting one. These are heavy Swedish leather covered leg irons and handcuffs in combination. The leg irons are locked with a padlock on each side.

I would say these are from mid to late 19:th century. Very heavy!

All I have are modern.
Here is a Smith & Wesson Model 1850 Transport Chain.
Leg restraints are Model 1900 with 14-1/2" chain
Wrist restraints are Model 1
Chain length between cuffs is 32"
Also shown is a news article of former U.S. Representative John Sweeney led to jail in one of these S&W Transport Chains.

I saw an ad for asylum supplies. This old flyer said the Bean neck collar was to protect the nurses from seeing the inmates in the act of self-pollution.

Not many postings this time. May I suggest somewhat wider topics for next? We are all interested to see each other’s treasures.
I just love to see what's hiding in other collectors collections. Yesterday, Mark surprised me with all his great Maltby cuffs that I didn't know he have.
Only a few collectors have web sites to show.

How many Bean Neck collar combos are out there?

This is probably my strangest combo set. Its not really much of a restraint, as it doesnt lock. This is a set of ceremonial irons that where use by organizations like the freemasons, skull and bones and other secret societies. They are really just a sort of decoration, to give the wearer the look and a feeling of being a prisoner, during the cremony thay would have been used for. I was able to track these down to about the 1920s from a company named, Lilly.

A friend and I make some combinations to sell on ebay. We take older, used cuffs and make different chain configurations. Im more of the idea guy and he is more of the physical work and an engineer, in his own right. We have both put together some strange combos that have been sold through the years. This Clejuso No. 13 and No. 8 "H" combo is for sale on Ebay, right now. We have done strange designs like this Smith and wesson Flamingo style cuff with lead chain. Not that the wearing would be walking anywhere! LOL! That one hasnt gone up for sale, yet. We also took a Chicago brand Boot Cuff, cut The Chain in half and add on a set of A.H.C. surplus handcuffs to make a neck collar combo, of sorts. I have two of these up for sale at the moment.

Got Goncz

I didn't think I had anything to contribute towards today's topic but I guess these will qualify.
These are some of the transportation cuffs I bought from John Goncz  a few years back.  I forgot I had these until the topic came up.

Lars, I too, would like to see and learn more.  I am always thrilled about seeing items I haven't known about.

I have seen Nil's collection in person and it was quite a thrill (and Stephani's dinner was even more so).  I believe he has added more since I had been there.
I really enjoyed seeing the real old Euro stuff that he has collected over the years as they are very hard to find in San Diego. Traveling through Nuremberg and Ghent was great in itself and a real treat to see all the ancient cuffs on display in their castles.

I would love to see more of the 16th -18th century items as a suggestion.
