Cuff of the Day for April 14. Made in Spain

Yesterday we visited Japan. Today we visit Spain.    Spanish cuffs have been popular for year as low cost cuffs of excellent quality.
Here is a good example.   What Spanish cuffs do you have in your collection?

This is a Alcyon flat key model.   The flat key made these cuffs an interesting alternative to the typical barrel key cuffs.

I have a few and I honestly never look at them. These are from my earlier days in collecting when I bought swing-around cuffs. None of my favorites...

Poor Spain!  A beautiful country chock full of nice people but they have lousy handcuffs.
I started off with Jay Pee, Star, Fury and Alcyon cuff as all of you did. Plentiful and cheap!
Years back, I labeled them as "Junk Cuffs" in my divorce proceedings and the opposing attorney went crazy as she thought they were super rare and I was minimalizing their value.
I still have them but they do not see the light of day as they are really are just residuum.
I have just two Spanish cuffs that I will share.

The first was a gift from Patrick when I visited him and his family in Holland.  These cuffs are a memento of a very nice time.  I have never seen a cuff with a leather strap before, so they are unique in that manner.
The second pair is either an authentic Bilboe or a good reproduction.  I am not qualified to determine this one, so any help would be appreciated.  It looked real to me so I added it to the collection.

Can't wait till we visit Germany!

Mark, I certainly agree; Spain is a very nice country with excellent food and wine and nice people  -  but the Spanish handcuffs are low quality stuff and most of them are modern and dull swing-arounds.

No tengo, no quiero.

Boy, i really need to clean these things up. LOL! A little streaked and dull. But this is a Fleismann Handcuff. I had never heard of it. But the construction of it, is of Spanish nature. By looking at them, I would be led to believe that they are also made by Alcyon? Alcyon has a lot of different names they made cuffs under.

Brad, I did tell this to my attorney.  If the cuffs are worth so much, she should keep them and pay me top dollar.  Her 4th lawyer got hold of almost half of the collection but could not find a buyer, so I got them back.

Yeah, I remember. There is justice in the world.

You are all correct, we have spent many months traveling around Spain and very little of interest. However back in 1974 I drove down to Agadir Morocco in an old Ford Escort. We stopped just outside Granada in a cafe and there were many old handcuffs and Legirons on the walls. With a limited budget I only bought two items and the Wedge Lock Legirons with original key are one of my favourites.
Also shown are early STAR cuffs with solid key, two Alcyon models with the unusual universal hinge and the Alcyon Rigid Pattern.
You may be surprised that the Spanish for Handcuffs is esposas - which can also mean Wife!

Here are my Alcyon 2 linked and 1 hinged cuffs. These are the only Spanish cuffs that I own.

I was told that NATO used these cuffs but the only NATO guy I encountered, did not use handcuffs.
So I would not put any merit on the claim.
Anyone else been told this info?

Interesting info, Mark. This Ebay page is the only time I have seen NATO and Spanish made handcuffs, cross referenced. They show a STAR handcuff that you can buy as ex- US/NATO handcuffs. So far, in my collection, i have Alamo, Alcyon, Astra, Chief of Police, E.I.C., Fitwell, Fleismann, Fury, Jana, Jay-Pee, Marex, PIC, Police, Romo Detective, Sile New Police, Sherlock, Star, Valco and Zephyr Chief. I believe every one of these can be traced back to having been made by the main Company,  Larranaga Y Elorza. Best known as "Alcyon."

Ha! Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

But seriously, I don't understand the lack of love you guys have over Alcyon / Jay Pee cuffs. I'd choose them any day over a Clejuso, or a French  or Czech cuff.
Maybe that's because my second cuff was a vintage 1970s police Alcyon. The metal is nice, so is the workmanship. They are heavier and chunkier than a standard peerless.
