Cuff of the Day for April 20. Training Cuffs

Let us try something a little different today.   The subject is training cuffs.  I can think of two types.  First are cuffs
made to be easy opening without the key for repeated practice.   Second are cut away cuffs where a special cuff
is made with the case cut away to demonstrate the inner workings of the cuff.

I will start with a training cuff I bought from a dealer in Poland.  The lever next to the key hole opens the cuff.

Lots of different models made. I will start with the ZAK Tool training cuff. This one has a serial number of 1831.

Training cuffs. I will show some of my U.S. made training cuffs. I have 3 different Zak Tool Training Cuffs that Chris showed us. I have the black knobs, the chrome knobs and the blue knobbed versions of this cuff. I also have a clear cut-away cuff from Shomer-Tec. As well as the ASP Model 100 Chained version of their training cuffs. Still in the original package. The ASP have a special feature that doesnt rely on any levers or knobs. Instead the pawls are made in such a way, all you have to do is to pull against the arms of the cuffs and they will come open. It takes a pretty strong pull to get them to open. So, you can train and practice cuffing skills, just like they are regular cuffs. -Richard Knip-

Here is another picture of the ASP training cuffs.   These just  pull open.  It takes a bit a force to open them by pulling, but it works well.

I also have the Trainer's Portfolio Case from ASP. These are not the correct cuffs in it, though. It should hold 1 chained, 1 hinged and 1 folding training cuff. I need to find one of each so I can correctly fill it up. Hard to find the used training cuffs. Departments are still using them. So,  they arent selling them, yet. The last one is from ASP's Red Gun Series of Training Aids.  These are a molded, resin set of chained cuffs, stacked like they would be to go in a handcuff case. They are the proper size and weight of a standard set of police handcuffs. They allow people to go through training without putting their actual gear, at risk. The Red Gun Series also includes resin replicas of guns, knives, tasers, other handcuffs and other police equipment.

Thanks for posting those, Chris. It never dawned on me they were from Lebec.

I live in Hart Flat. We are both tiny mountain communities in the mountains that surround Bakersfield. I had no idea anything was ever invented or made in Lebec.

Now I have to go look for some.

Bjoern. Your Thumbcuffs are made by Reevesline. I found one, new in the box, on Ebay. I cant recall how long ago?

These nifty little devices from CTS Thompson turn nearly any pair of modern swing through cuffs or irons into "training" cuffs.  They are magnetic and have a built in swivel.  They sadly don't work with my American Handcuff Co cuffs that I have tried, but work with any more modern cuff, including Smith and Wesson, Peerless, Chicago, etc, but not ASP.  The magnet is strong and doesn't fall out. There is a little indent on the brass knob to indicate where the key flag is.  If you double lock the cuffs, this can also unlock that, as it is simply a modified handcuff key. 

I was thinking that this would pair nicely with the new Smith and Wesson Lever Lock cuffs.  You could apply, double lock, and unlock, all with simplicity and without needing a normal key handy.
