Cuff of the Day for April 25. Long Cuffs

Yesterday we looked at small cuffs. Today we stay with the size theme and look at handcuffs
with long chains (or bars) between them. There are lots of examples of user modified "long cuffs" so extra
credit for factory made models.

I will start with a Nichols cuff from the early 19th century. It appears to be a factory original cuff with a number matched key.
The chain is 6 inches (15 cm) in length.

Beat this! The Chubb Arrest Handcuffs with 8 foot chain. These were always very difficult to obtain, about 5 years ago there was an outcry in the UK where even pregnant prisoners were escorted to Hospital and were kept in handcuffs with the closeting chain while giving birth.
Their use was banned and a few appeared on the market. This one has a home office restricted key.

Your pair are even more unusual as the double lock is on the side whereas most are a slot - top and bottom

The Bar Cuffs seem righteous but the long chain, I have my doubts.
Just do not know if it is factory or not.
A nice job done on the end links so the chain was added after the cuff was assembled. Did the factory do it? Did a jail or prison do it? Maybe even for the theatre use.
I will never know but the chain is exactly 36 inches so it is plausible they were made from spec. Jail or theater might not have needed the chain length to be so precise.

These cuff of the day threads are GREAT! I have never seen as much activity since I've been a lurker/member of the site, which has been several years anyway. I'm also seeing many members posting regularly whom I had seldom or never seen anything from in the past.
My collection being modest and even "small" in comparison to many here, (I count 61 restraints in my collection by last count. Probably approaching 65 by now),I have not had something to share for a lot of these topics, but I have been following with enthusiasm and sharing what I do have.

Today I've got two pair of bar darbys. (wait...should it be "darbys" or "darbies"??)

One pair of Hiatt cast alloy adjustable handcuffs, which are a Hiatt "replica" of the 115, which have a solid steel bar 12". As I mentioned in a prior post, while these cuffs are certainly awkward, they are not so secure. I tried them on and could easily unlock myself, so the bar does not do it's job of keeping the hands separated. Even worse, when locked on the first notch, the spring loaded locking darby pawl can be 'shimmed' very readily to release the cuffs. There was a hole in the center of the bar to which I've added a connecting link.

The second is a pair of adjustable darby shackles made by KUB. This is a nickel plated brass cuff, on an 18" stainless steel bar with an integrated attachment point. These are certainly awkward and more restraining that normal chained shackles. I do wonder at the usage of bar shackles in particular; they seem to lean more towards the punishment/torture side of things rather than simply safely restraining, which chained cuffs do just fine.

I have a set of Tower leg irons on a long chain that I believe is a factory made item, they are marked W. S. P. for Washington State Prison and show no signs of repair and were probably a special order item.

I supplied many blacksmithed round bars to people to make bars cuffs from. I supplied 8 inch, 10 inch and 12 inch lengths. Flattened at each end with holes. No idea what cuffs people attached to them.

Brad, I was just teasing you about a longer chain blued H&R but Normand Marion in Montreal actually has a pair and shared his picture with us. He also has an odd oval link H&R that I have never seen before.

Bottom two are interesting. I can’t tell for sure but on the middle cuff with the single oblong link looks right. Would love to hold it. It’s a “First Model” so I’m guessing something experimental. Occasionally see oddities among them.

Bottom one has the bow groove and the old style welded clevises. Something transitional I guess.

I know that Fetters Intl. sold a 15" long bar with Hiatt Darby cuffs on it. Chis Gower was telling me about it, when I showed him my 15" Hiatt bar handcuff amd Matching Leg irons . I had bought a collection, that had other gear from Fetters. I believe that is what mine is. Im not sure if Fetters made it or had Hiatt make it, for them? Perhaps Chris can shed some light on that for us? The ends of your bar arent quite like mine tho?

Brad, Yes, Fetters is contemporary. They are still functioning, but have moved their operations from the U.K. to the U.S. They are a company that makes cuffs and items for the fetish community. Very well made pieces, though. I was on the fence, if i was going to add their items to my collection or not? I decided, I would add a few of their pieces. The Hiatt bar cuffs, being one of them.
