Cuff of the Day for May 4. Stotz

This week I would like to continue cover a different manufacturer each day covering various countries as we go.

Today is Stotz Day.  I will start with some Nipper pictures.

The Stotz are very nice and I have a few versions of them.


Standard version, plated with "A Stotz" stamping

Standard version, bare iron

Small barrel version, plated

Standard version, bare iron with extra ring (probably for attachment to a belt)

An odd heavier version with the cuffs configurated upside down.

This pic is a repeat from yesterday but the topic is Stotz for today, so here it is again.

I do not have a Stotz, until about 2 weeks ago, except for one of Ian's replica Leg Irons.  Now, i have two, original Stotz and one replica. I found one of the Stotz in Germany and one in the United States. Neither are marked, that I know of. Im still waiting for the German found pair, to arrive.  Two different barrel lengths.

his is one of my favorite cuffs of Ian's replicas, because of it being a very early restraint that he made under the company name of T.A.R.R.C.They are marked with the company name, as well. After talking with Ian, I was able to date them to the 1980s. These came into my collection about 4 or 5 years ago, through a private sale of a collection in illinois.

My two.

I have three in the collection, am still trying to get things organised and can only find two. Neither have any markings on them, the 3rd one I have has a larger centre ring. In my move lots of keys have fallen off and need matching up. Hopefully over the next 3 months things will get a little more organised.

Mark, your first set with threads inside the lock is very interesting. With suitable "inserts" they would for sure double lock.
I've seen and handled many Stotz but I've never seen this variation anywhere else. It actually wouldn't be too hard to make such "inserts"
I wonder if this is an original factory modification or made after production.

Not much is known of the Stotz production. I have three different shapes of barrels in my collection. I assume the first one (largest) is the oldest.

These were my first Stotz and I found them at a gun show, long, long ago.
I figured that all Stotz cuffs were like this until books and the internet made the information more accessible. 
I thought that maybe someone altered them after they left the factory but I believe the key was originally made with the 2 posts.
If someone did an alteration, they most certainly did a great job. 
I wish I had the 2 caps though.

Browsing for shackles for May 31, I found a pair of Stotz leg irons, with bicycle chain-type bow, probably made from handcuffs and just extended, or reworked. However, three identical shackles are known, so they may have been factory produced.
