Cuff of the Day for May 7. Konepaja Voima

This week I would like to continue cover a different manufacturer each day covering various countries as we go.

The Konepaja Voima is a cuff from  Finland. It is the precursor to the American H&R Super and numerous modern Chinese cuffs.

While this is not a true factory item it is an interesting piece and professionally put together.

My contribution for HR's

Heteka is another maker that made the same style cuff.
I know of no other examples that are polished metal or nickel plated.  It seems that only the blue finish is available for these Finnish cuffs.
I've never seen one marked in any manner either.

Ironically, the only version of the Konepaja I actually miss, is Joe's non-swing around version. These are pretty rare.

A very nice and rare plated version I was donated from the Helsinki police in early 80's
An odd bar version I bought from the foremrr collection of the Finnish escape artist Timo Toumivaara. According to crafsmanship, these are factory made

Well, there are a few H&R too of course.

Some of the H&R cuffs in my collection are these Belly Chains with H&R cuffs and this Double H&R Super Lead Chain. Both of these came from 2 different prison items auctions. The double came from one that featured items from the Joliet Prison in Joliet, IL and the Belly Chains came from a prison auction in Ohio, many years ago.
I have two newer models of the Super Cuffs. The 2 link with the original box and the harder to find four link. I am also currently looking for the Early model with the extra links.

Two KP cuffs, the top one is marked FF which apparently came from Falu Fangelse Police or Prison. Hopefully someone will know.
The bottom pair is the non swing through pattern. Think they are pretty rare Joe has a set that he showed how many are known?

As the topic includes H&R, we must not forget the H&R Bean Improved Handcuff. Why were they reintroduced? This set was inspected on Sept 30th 1943. They must have been expensive to make compared to the normal H&R Super cuffs or Peerless.

Chris, you are correct! "FF" stands for "Falu Fängelse" (Falu prison) and I believe they once came from me as I traded a set with a former correction officer from that prison.

The non swing-around KP are scarce, no doubt. I've handled a number of KP during the years but I never came across these.
I know of another set in a set in a prison museum here in Sweden and I'm still trying to trade them...

I particularly appreciate the H & R super cuff leg irons. I'm not sure I've ever seen those come up on ebay.  They must be quite rare.
As mentioned in the first post by Joe, these were later copied by Chinese cuff makers, and the new version is still used to this day, both as handcuffs and leg irons.  I have one of these, and I must say they seem rather low quality, albeit secure. They have a notched wheel that interlocks with ridges on the swing arm.  The cuffs are linked with two swiveling clevis links and a single O ring. The security feature on these cuffs is that the keyway is hidden when they are worn, as the clevis must turn 90 degrees to the plane of the cuff body to expose the keyway, making it very difficult to manipulate the swivel just so and insert a key.  They do double lock by turning the key the opposite direction, but on my cuffs, it doesn't work well. The originals had a double pronged key, while these have a hollow triangle shape in the bottom of the key.

Two KV Solids. All I’ve got. Opposite of Lars, no swing throughs. I’d trade you Lars, but only the ugly pair works, open cuff has part of a broken key wedged in it

And two different size leg irons. The smaller one is unmarked and since no others have shown up, I suspect something the factory was playing with. Got them and the cutaways together in an H&R gun box with a note saying to return them. Factory junk, I believe.
