Cuff of the Day for May 15. Palmer

I am not an expert on Palmer cuffs so I am counting on others to tell their story today.
They are one of the most novel approaches to cuffs that we have seen.

I will start with a pair of handcuffs with their accessory chain.

Misconception of the Palmer lock is that it has a screw for the “double locking” or ‘added security”
 
The patentee noted that if the spring latch was to fail, the screw could be used to secure the cuff.

Not much to add this time, I'm only having Nr 2, 3 and 4.

I guess I should have giving a description on yesterday's contribution. Didn't realize I was in for a geography lesson. I posted a photo that I thought was an interesting comparison of cuffs

Today's contribution are all 5 Palmers with original chains.The Palmers are believed to have been made for the Untied States Navy and patented in Jan 18, 1876 by James Palmer produced by the Walton Bro's Co N.Y. They are numbered 1 thru 5. Five being the smaller handcuff one being the larger legiron it takes 2 keys to unlock one lock being a set screw.The chains are interchangeable Hope today's contribution meets Marks approval Geisha not included

I have been able to purchase 3 different sets of Palmers. I have one set of Handcuffs that are size 3. The Leg irons with original chain are size 2. And the last set is one of Ian's Replica  sets that is a size 4. Ian's set is also gimmicked for use by escape artists. This Palmer is one of my favorite cuffs, since I had bought it at my first year of attending the Indianapolis Crossroads of America Lock Show. I bought this set from John Bushey. It will forever hold a special place in my heart.

I'm quite impressed by all of the complete sets of Palmer's (#'s 1 thru 5 with original chains).
Maybe one day I'll be able to piece together a full set of my own.

So far I've only been able to acquire the following.

A #3 Large handcuff / Small leg iron, without its chain.

A #4 that was found in relic condition and repaired by John Bushey and Bob Dix. The locks work, but it's still kind of a wall hanger.



And Ian's Replica Palmer #4's with Ian's Palmer neck collar.


The patina on the replica cuffs was added by John.
The chain didn't come with the handcuffs but was made later by Ian from old parts he had lying around.

Just 2 sets to show, size 3 with chain and a size 5. I can not believe many size 5 cuffs were made, they appear to be a reasonable size when closed but to put them on the photos show you need a wrist smaller than 45mm x 50mm perhaps I should have shown it on the small/juvenile handcuff day.

Fred, I hope I did not make you cringe with my ribbing on you yesterday.
I figured that you made an error or something was up that made you post your cuff from a different  topic
I would never try to embarrass anyone who would gift me with a White Castle hat.

BTW, you have a nice set of Palmers.  I won't even post mine as yours and the others covered today's topic very well.
