Cuff of the Day for May 23. Mattatuck, Maltby, and Judd

Today we explore the cuffs made by the Mattatuck Company, including Mattatuck, Maltby and Judd cuffs. 

I will start with the first Maltby.  The original patented version was heavier than later cuffs and had a double row of teeth.  Maltby handcuffs
had a cocking lever which gave them a neat action, but the multitude of parts made them very complicated.

I just have the ordinary stuff, nothing exciting.

I have the usual Maltby and Judd cuffs in my collection.   One day I was messing with one of my Maltby, round key cuffs and dropped them.  It seems like the body covers are very brittle and one cuff broke in many pieces.  Well there went a nice cuff.  I gathered the pieces and glued the back side making a "cut a way".  It's amazing how complex the mechanism is making it an expensive cuff to make and repair.

Looking for more information about Mattatuck hand cuffs. Ian McColl suggested I join this group. This is my set. I got the key from Ian. I had to file it to get it to work. They were locked when I got them.

According to my opinion, the Mattatuck products are interesting, technicality advanced and very spectacular but the all overall material quality and especially the plating is very low.

Any idea what they are worth?

Of the 3 styles of cuffs that Mattatuck made and sold, yours is the most common. Its just referred to as a Mattatuck Handcuff. As long as the cuff is in full working order, meaning the key unlocks the key and allows the swing arms to move freely in and out of the cuffs body, until the arm is opened all of the way and you hear a "click." The click, of course, is the lock resetting itself and will allow the pawl to lock into place the next time the cuff's arm enters the lock body. In general, a decent shape Mattatuck Handcuff with a working key will get anywhere from $100 to about $125, in today's market. If you had the original box, that would push the price up higher.
