Cuff of the Day June 2. One-off or prototype.

We all have an oddball one-off cuff, leg iron or restraint that we really like. We think no one else has one. Or do they???
It could be a known manufacturer, making it really rare and collectable. It could be so unknown that that we didn't know we wanted one.

Here is another of my favourites. Manufactured by William Palfreyman of Retford. It is dated?1816 and stamped Worksop Parish. It is very much like others recently shown on here which were made by Griffin, Hiatt. Although very well made the edges are not rounded off, an so could be very uncomfortable! This I regard as a one-off, from a maker not known for making cuffs.

I have shown this cuffs on other threads in the past. I do think this is a "one off or a prototype" handcuff. It is a Smith & Wesson Model 200 Pats Pending. Take a look at the hinge. The hinge is like no other S&W Model 200 that I have ever seen. No one has stepped forward and said that they have one. Mine seems to be the only one. Since the teeth on the hinge are larger than the ones on the production model, this may have been some type of a test, to see if this style of hinge would be stronger? All in all, the center section on this pair, is narrower, than the production model is.

You can also see if the pictures, that these cuffs lack a serial number stamp from the factory. But, they have the rest of the stamping a regular Model 200 has.

I really like your William Palfreyman cuff. I always like to see a new handcuff maker.  And having it dated is a nice think because it helps to confirm the dates of the Griffin and Hiatt bar cuffs.

So far, yours are the only set of solid rigid s&W cuffs I have seen. So, as of now, i would say yours would have been a prototype, a test sample or perhaps, one that was pulled from the line before the hinges were cut. As to why, i have no idea. Very cool to see they went into a nice collection, tho!

These odd cuffs have been posted previously but they surely deserve to be posted again in this topic. If this a prototype or just a one-off cuff, it’s impossible to tell. I won them in a local auction here in Sweden some eight years ago. 
They are very well made and feel handcrafted. I don’t know the country of origin but I would say they are European. I have never seen a similar set in any other collection.
Mark once named them “Pinkerstotz” as the design reminds of both the Tower Pinkerton and the Stotz.
