#1The John P. Lovell Arms Company was established in 1844 in Boston and manufactured and sold police equipment invented by Edward Davis Bean. Bean lived on the outskirts of Boston, permitting a close working relationship with Lovell. From Lovell catalogs and billheads it is clear that Bean and Lovell had a long-standing relationship. It was so close that Bean became an employee of Lovell. In 1893 Bean was not only the compiler of Lovell's catalogs, but was the General Manager of John P. Lovell Arms Company. It's also interesting to note that Lovell's 1887 catalog included ads for John J. Tower's double lock and Detective handcuffs, pointing out that they had a full line of Tower's police equipment in stock.
