The first patent was assigned to the Mattatuck Manufacturing Company in Waterbury, Connecticut. We also know that Mattatuck manufactured Judd handcuffs. The Mattatuck Manufacturing Company was organized on October 15, 1896 by three men who owned equal shares in the company. According to the book, Waterbury and the Naugatuck Valley, "the company manufactured brass and wire goods, furniture nails, upholstery nails, spring bed fabrics, screw machine products, handcuffs, wire forms and shapes and novelties." By 1918 it employed 500 people.
Henry G. Judd was not just an inventor, but on January 26, 1899 had already been affiliated with the Mattatuck Manufacturing Company. On that date he was elected a director of the company, He was re-elected a director on January 23, 1900 and elected secretary of the corporation.
