Danforth Homer Royce

 An early and now rare nipper was patented on May 3, 1870 (102,563) by four individuals, George Lutz, Danforth H. Royce, Michael Trenor and Robert Chadwick. All of these men resided in Columbus Ohio. Danforth Royce was born in Columbus on August 10, 1839.  He was a descendant of Elder William Brewster who came to America on the Mayflower. The 1870 census lists him as an engine builder, the 1880 census as a machinist, as does the 1900 census.  He learned the trade of machinist in the Little Miami Railroad shops, where he worked for 11 years. In 1865 he became a foreman in an agricultural machine company, which he held until May 1, 1866 when he left to become the president and superintendent of the Franklin Machine Company. This company was established on August 16, 1869 and was still in existence in 1913. All of the above were located in Columbus. It is said that he was one of the greatest all-around mechanics in Ohio, having built machines from chronometers to a locomotive. He was also a member of the Columbus police commission in the 1870's. 
Royce died on March 12, 1903. Some years ago on the Handcuff Forum one contributer suggested that the nipper these men invented was made by  Danneberg Petry & Co. of Newark, NJ.  To date I have not found any information about this company. It may have been the name of a dealer, not a manufacturer and my guess is that with all four inventors living in Ohio it is more likely it was made in that state. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who might know more about Danneberg or anything else related to this nipper.

I give you credit for deciphering what you have been able to do. I have found out that Dannebergs first name was Hermann and am resonably sure that Petry's first name was Peter.  Mark's photo clearly shows the nipper's stamp as Danneberg Petry & Co. Newark N.J., but does not have the word Manuftured or Mfg. on it.  My nipper does not have that writing on it so I am pretty sure that company was a retail dealer of police goods and hardware tools. Hardware companies frequently carried police goods. At least that's how I read the data so far.
