ASP vs Peerless

I like the ASP designs but can't get over how cheap these handcuffs feel. I have minimal confidence in ASP handcuff security. The fact you can replace their locking mechanism with the end of their own key or any pointed object is dangerous.

Every time I pickup a pair of Peerless I can't help but notice the quality of the metal and how tight the springs are. I think if Peerless made their chain and hinged designs with triple pawl and more teeth per pawl, and rails to prevent shimming, and standard and exclusive key options, it would make their handcuffs supremely outstanding. I'm a big fan of polished nickel finish and that's a win for me with peerless.

I think most would agree however that asp peerless and even chicago and smith are just too easy to shim by current design.

By shimming, are you using the shim while the cuff is just locked closed or double locked? The double lock on cuffs will defeat the ability to shim the cuff open as it freezes the pawl in place and wont allow you to push it down with the shim. Just to clear up the removable lock debate on an ASP cuff, they are no more dangerous than any other cuff. Removing the lock is only accomplished by having the cuff unlocked and open. Once the cuff is around someone's wrist, it is no longer an issue. Again, any time a cuff is in use by an officer or prison, etc, the cuffs are to be double locked. A single locked cuff is asking for trouble. Peerless actually has a bit of a shadow over the brand, after the recalls that they had to do with the double locking mechanisms. In a recent survey with working Police officers, S&W was still number one with ASP taking 2nd place and Peerless coming in at 3rd. Dont get me wrong, Peerless does make a great cuff and they stand behind the lifetime guarantee, which is a great thing to have if the cuffs are used a lot. Its just some of their past models didnt come out as well and kind of had a bad name in the industry because of that. The 700c, is a solid cuff. As far as standard cuffs go, personally, i would rate it with any other of the American Made Cuffs. They work well, made well and do the job they are intended to do. In overall quality, i think the older S&W and Peerless lines were better made, and made of better materials, but that is just my opinion.

Yeah I get the double locking feature and understand it creates another barrier to shim the cuff but I do like security enhancements beyond the double lock when available. I do like the design of asp cuffs but wish they would not have changed the colors in the third gen? The color line isn't as appealing as the entire cuff being painted.
