Ant, one of the forum members had purchased the Saf-Lok from cancuffs. The buyer in turn sold them later and I have them in my collection, now.

Its hard to say for sure, Paul. We just seen a few Saf-Lok MKIV sell on Ebay in recent months for About $350. Both were pretty much new and in great working shape with keys. The one we are discussing here is an MKI, which of course is harder to come by. Without having seen any others sold recently, I could only say they would be at least equal to, if not greater in value than the newer MKIV. Do you have an MKI you are looking to sell?

I have a MkIV for sale. It is lightly engraved "Courts CCR" = Courts Custody Co-oridation Registry, which is in Melbourne. Comes with key fully working.

I have a SAF-LOK MKI and a SAF-LOK MKIV and never could tell what the difference is.
They sure look identical, minus the stamping.
Something internal?

There are several variations of the MKI and of the MKIV. Of course, one difference is the stamping on the cuffs and sometimes on the swing arms. But, most of the MKI cuffs only have 2 chain links connecting them, whereas the MKIV had 3 links. The MKI also had the bushing style hinge pin with the hollow center. But, there is a variant that had a pinned hinge with a solid center. There was a lock change on the internals from MKI to MKIV, but I do not know exactly what that change was? I was able to get this information from the Handcuff Annual 2007.

I think a couple of other differences are the number of pin tumblers used - Mk1 = 2 pins vs MkIV = 3 pins? 
Also the early ones (chrome / nickel) may have been cast from fairly standard steel forgings vs. the stronger investment cast SS forgings used in the MkIV and MkV.
I might be wrong with all this...Ian would be the expert here!

Hi Paul, thanks for letting me know about your MkIVs. 
I'm pretty keen on finding a set of Mk1s (especially the early chrome solid pin) or MkIVs in VGC without departmental stampings, engravings etc.
