These hinged cuffs are similar in shape to the American Handcuff N-100 Handcuffs chain variety except that they are joined by three ball-ended pins which serve as a hinge. Motion is NOT limited to one plain, rather it is constrained to about 30 degrees of motion in the rotational plain as well as full motion in the hinge plain. If the cuffs are correctly applied (with the keyhole facing AWAY from the hands) it is unlikely that a prisoner could escape them, even with a key!
They are designed to offer some relief compared to "regular" hinged handcuffs which have a tendency, because of their rigidity, to cause injury to prisoners (dislocated shoulders, etc..) Many police departments are unhappy with hinged cuffs due to this problem and these are designed to offer a third option - more secure than chain cuffs but less dangerous than fully hinged cuffs.

These hinged cuffs are similar in shape to the American Handcuff N-100 Handcuffs chain variety except that they are joined by three pivot-anchored BARS which serve as a hinge. Motion is limited to one plane. If the cuffs are correctly applied (with the keyhole facing AWAY from the hands) it is unlikely that a prisoner could escape them, even with a key!
These have been discontinued recently (1999) in favor of the American Handcuff N-520 Handcuffs.

Oversized hinged handcuffs for those larger prisoners. These can also be used as extremely disabling leg irons. As always, hinged cuffs do present a safety issue in that their rigidity can cause damage should the prisoner land on his/her hands for any reason unexpectedly.

American Handcuff has done it again. They have just come out with an innovative new product, the N-550 (and its brother, the lightweight aluminum A-550) Hinged Handcuff. Basically a variation on a theme, this cuff has some refinements that make it stand out from the crowd:
- The body is elongated and trimmed to allow for a more secure grip while being applied.
- The wrist openings are eliptically contoured to prevent slippage and rotation.
- The wrist openings are tilted for reduced pressure on to the wearer's wrists.
- The two hinge plates allow for some off-axis motion adding to their safety.
- The finish is well up to the American Handcuff standards.
All in all a cuff that should do quite well in the market place.
