Obviously in their Open State. My Cuffs.
"H&R Super-cuffs - Chinese Copy :The H and R (Harrington Richardson) were made in the U.S. and were favored by the FBI and many other law enforcement agencies. These were known as the strongest swing thru cuffs in their day. The original version of this cuff was actually manufactured in Helsinki, Finland. In the 1990's, one or more Chinese companies made a very similar version for their police departments. Basically the most noticeable difference is the key. Even thought the H&R and this model has the same unlocking procedure, the key on this model has a machined out triangular hole at the tip of the key whereas the H&R has 2 prongs.
To open these cuffs, the clevis must be rotated and the opening appears. The picture shows this action in a partial open state."
I received my Cuffs yesterday and although they are "Chinese Copies" they are Definitely Not Chinese Junk.
Extremely well made and very heavy. And used daily in China by their Police and various Security Forces. I have NOT tried them on but I can recommend them . Especially for 30 Bucks !

Several years ago a collector at one of the lock shows had a set of these cuffs, however the locking mechanism was controlled by a magnetic key. It was a little tricky to open but it was an unusual mechanism. I have never seen another pair.

The cuff Ron speaks of has a central hub with rectangular keyhole. it's free spinning without the key inserted. The key has a magnet embedded in the blade. When the key inserted into the cuff, it draws a steel pin from the pawl into the hub. This links the two and when the key is turned, the pawl will release the cuff. Removing the key make the pin withdraw and the keyhole hub is again free to spin. Oh those tricky people. Clever.

I just recently started collecting handcuffs so I'm still trying to learn as much as possible about cuffs but I can see and feel the quality in the new Chinese version of these cuffs.
Excellent quality and the unique locking mechanism is very interesting. I don't think that someone would be able to Pick them open with a paperclip!

Ron, This is a Chinese PTC Magnetic Pin Handcuff this is a copy of the H&R Super Cuff's design. Is this the magnetic cuffs you are referring to?

Richard, this looks like another model of the cuff. The one I was referring to is described by CHI-NA in a previous post. It looks like they made at least two typer of magnetic key cuffs and one swing through model. I have never seen these for sale, but I was not looking to buy Chinese cuffs. I think the three models were limited in production and will be very collectable.

I have two pair of the Chinese version, His and her cuffs. The small ones will close down to a ridiculous size that would work on any female or juvenile. The larger ones are more like what would be considered 'standard size' but they too will close to a very small inside diameter. The same locking mechanism is shared by both sizes and of course they require their own size keys which have the triangular opening.

Value: EUR 120,- to 160,- These unusual and rare handcuffs of the "H. & R. Arms Company, Worcester, Massachusetts" from the 1930s (the patent dates from 10.09.1932) were part of the standard equipment of American FBI officials. They are excellently processed and difficult to crack, not least due to the unusual locking mechanism. The keyhole is located under the two connecting D-rings. When pulled apart, the keyhole is covered by the bolt of the D-ring, so you can only unlock the clamps if the D-ring is at a 90-degree angle to the clamp. The lock is done by turning the key against the unlocking direction to the stop. On the big picture you can see another specimen below. This is a bit newer and has guide grooves in the temple. Both examples are with "H&R Arms Company", "Worcester, Mass. U.S.A.", "Pat. 1,984,677" and "Made in U.S.A." Be careful, there is also a modern Chinese handcuff model (see "Rest of the World"), which was modeled after the "H&R Super Handcuffs" and therefore looks very similar to them. However, these are completely unlabeled and differ above all by a "tooth wheel" for gripping the ironing teeth instead of a lock trap with rows of teeth. On top of that, the imitation has an additional circular ring FN Herstal, Belgium handcuffs from 1960's. These handcuffs are opened by a magnetic key. These may be the cuffs with the Magnetic keys ?

Finnish made Konepaja Voima handcuffs was developed between 1922-1926. Patent application was sended 1927 and next year 1928 Voima (kosti Hangelin) got patend.

First version of Voima cuffs is without any hallmarks and it used screw -type key. (pre 1926)
Second version was hallmarked on bow "Konepaja Voima, Helsinki"
Third version (1927-1928) was hallmarked on bow "Konepaja Voima, Helsinki" and on the other bow "Pat.Hak. No. 1731" (=patent pending No 1731)
Fourth version (1928->) was hallmarked on bow "Konepaja Voima, Helsinki" and on the other bow "Patentti No 12928" (=patent No 12928).

Thanks Mika for a great post!

The Konepaja is among my favorite Finnish cuffs as the quality of manufacture is superior.

In addition to those versions Mika presented is a plated version (scarce) and a prison transport bar version (very rare). There is also a less common version which is non swing-through.
Mika is very knowledgeable in Finnish handcuffs and he has learned me a lot.
