How to tell a Bean Prison from a Bean Patrol Handcuff

Every once in a while there is that thing that was known, and is now forgotten. We used to have most examples of Bean handcuffs on hand. We have been downsizing and no longer have the Bean Prison and Patrol version in the collection. I used to be able to tell the difference since the prison version was about 4 ounces heavier than that patrol version.

I know I should know this but I will swallow my pride and ask a new on the block question. I am asked to help sell a Bean handcuff. It weighs One pound one ounce, but I never kept a record of which one weighed which. Google is not my friend on this one.

So the bottom line is am I being asked to sell a Bean Prison or Bean Patrol handcuff?

Oh, forgot to mention... The only marking is a Pat date of Nov 28, 82.

Bjoern above is correct. This is actually a set of "Bean Patrolman Type" handcuffs, made by Iver Johnson. However, the Detective, Patrolman and Prison weights, do not apply to this cuff. These were only sold under the one weight.

TL, im not sure what you mean by "it's Michael Griffin's fault?" What are you referring to? Could you please expand on this?

The Bean handcuffs are best to be looked at by the hinges rather than the bows to determine version; Prison, Patrolman or Detective.

As you say your set is stamped “Nov 28, 82”, you have a Bean barrel key and not an Iver Johnson. The Iver Johnson cuffs are stamped “Iver Johnson Co Boston”. To my knowledge the Bean barrel key is earlier and rarer then Iver Johnson.

I forgot to add, the link on the Detective is thinner than for Patrolman and Prison. There are however always exceptions.
Here is a Patrolman with a Detective link. The second picture shows the difference between the thin link Patrolman and a Detective.
