I may start a new blog about Providence Leg Iron condition.
I am wondering who might have the most mint condition one among us.
Let's see who has one that would make me envious.

We all know that these were used during the Civil War and most of them saw some service on some of the most famous battlegrounds there is.
The weather and rough conditions were not kind to these restraints, so I wonder if any examples exist in mint state.
Almost all that I have seen have their condition as heavily pitted to a nice brown patina.

I have a pair that retains 80% of its plating as well as its key.  The chain is almost all plated still.

I believe these were produced into the 1880s and so many were not used in the war. Obviously the plated cuffs will age better than those that were not. Here is an unplated LI with clear PTC markings and original key which is available for trade for rare English cuffs.

I have two sets currently. I cant say that mine are anything to envy as far as being in the best shape. One is patina'd and one is more of a raw finish, but neither have the original plating intact. Overall, the patina'd set is in better condition as the raw finished one was likely stripped at some time and shows pitting. Key with the top set I believe is one of Ian's replacement keys, but it was made with patina to match a different set of PTC Cuffs I have.

Thanks guys.
Some nice PTC's there.

Here are my two...one plated and one probably not plated.
I did not intend on hi-hacking Ron's blog but I asked only because minty PTC's are super rare and I've never seen one better than the one I have.

I may move the blog to a new one if this gets much more interest.
To segway my blog with Ron's, every collection MUST contain a Providence Tool item at some point.  Here is your chance to get the only American made Darby cuff.

Can I assume the key made to fit cuffs is a hybrid thread, because the irons and the cuffs have different threads??

I can say I know Ian’s reproduction key work both the irons and the cuffs other then that I have no idea. However now I will see if my original cuff key works my irons as well.

Nickel plating? Isn’t safe to say that most likely nothing nickel plated saw any part of the Civil War? Nickel plating was done at an earlier date but didn’t become popular till Isaac Adams nickel plated some glass in 1865. The Civil war ended on the 9th of April that same year.  Ron J

I never gave it much thought until you brought it up but you rarely find Providence Tool Co. irons in mint or pristine condition the way you do other old cuffs. Do you suppose the type of iron used could account for some of this? Just a thought.

I am not sure how much cost is involved in plating cuffs, but it an additional expense step that elevates the price when sold.
The purchasing department for the war effort, being Union or Confererate, certainly did not need their restraints to be more expensive.
I imagine that they bought as many as they can at the lowest cost and simply bought the unplated versions.
Ron J. brings up a good point that plating was in its infancy about this time, so production costs were most likely high, and shipments delayed for the extra time required.
My best guess is that the army or navy ended up with mostly unplated items and in later years, various police departments or jails placed their orders for the plated versions as they bought them in lower quantities and could afford the added expense.

Thanks for checking on that Ron. All of my Providence keys also fit both handcuff and leg irons. Not sure if that is anything special or not? I was always under the impression, thats how they came from the factory?

Richard I believe that’s how they are made. Basically because that’s what Ian told me and how else could his reproduction keys fit both the cuffs and leg irons? Ron J

That's very interesting. My HC and LI keys are original and quite different to each other. The cuffs have not been altered.
LI key on the left won't even fit into the cuffs because it is wider. The handcuff key won't work on the LI because the internal key dimensions are wider ie the thread wont grip. I don't think wear would account for the difference. Doesn't matter either way but it is curious.

I had an overwhelming amount of interest on these and I thank you all.
𝕋𝕙𝕖𝕤𝕖 ℂ𝕦𝕗𝕗𝕤 𝕒𝕣𝕖 𝕟𝕠𝕨 𝕤𝕠𝕝𝕕!
I wish I had enough for everyone.

If anyone missed out on Rons offering, I have a nice Civil War era Providence Tool handcuff to sell too.
I will post some better pictures when I get back.
The "Prov. Tool" markings appear on each cuff, but they are faint. They are readable and the cuff comes with 1 original key.
Swivel is perfect, no real blemishes, nice strong springs, no repairs.  Real nice dark and even patina.
I will also ask $270 but I will include priority mail for those in the U.S.
You will not be disappointed in owning these!

Perhaps Mr Lyons would like to abide by the recent request of the forum founder when it comes to selling his wares. After all you even asked Joe for additional requirements to be considered when selling items. Show some respect and do as Joe asks. Doing as requested by the gentleman who made this platform possible is the very least that should be expected from the users of the forum.
Save your outrage and indignation, don't bother replying to this as I for one wont go out of my way to read it. The very least you should do is to apologise for your total disregard of what is a simple rule which Joe has gone out of his way to request that members follow.

In my opinion, what Mark did, was done correctly. It says what the item is, a description of the item and pictures of it. How much he wants and it does state that he will include shipping in the U.S., so one could surmise that he too is located within the boundaries of the U.S. Though, he could have come out and said "California", and he could have started his own Post for the sale of his cuffs, i personally dont see where he did wrong here?

Im well aware of who "CB" is, as we all are. AS I mentioned before, look into getting a VPN. Technology was always your downfall. Your digital signature is all over your posts. This is what you have to contribute to this forum? My advice to you, is either join back in with the members and become an active part of the forum, in a constructive and helpful way, or dont darken the doorstep of the forum with the negative comments. Put aside your anger and vendettas against certain members on these pages.

I believe the concern with how Mark handled selling his own set of cuffs should have been handled in an email to Joe Lauher, personally. And not taken out here on the pages of the forum.

Thank you, Richard,
I believe I followed the bullet points in the "for sale' agenda set forth.
Perhaps the "For Sale" verbiage was vague since I did not start the blog and waited for Ron's item to sell before I offered mine.
If I broke any rules, a normal person would write in a PM or here to allow me to correct any omission.
Being that the above author went to attack mode instead of a friendly reminder, indicates to me that some brain function isn't operating correctly.

Maybe I should have stated that there can be no sales to Australia unless the buyer's initials are P.D.  I would have jumped at the chance to help P.D. out. At least 50% of the handcuff collecting community Down Under is normal.

It is a little-known fact that I have been taking online pharmacy classes at the ACME School of Online Pharmacy as well as changing locks at many of the local pharmacies in town.  They say that I am now qualified to recommend medications, but I am not allowed to fill prescriptions, yet.
I do recommend the following;

Therapy

Different types of therapy, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, are used in the treatment of anger disorders. These types of treatments can be very effective because they teach you how to deal with stress and anger in healthier, more effective ways. For example, by helping individuals realize when their thought processes lead to angry outbursts, therapists can help create long-term positive changes for their clients. As the saying goes: change your thoughts, change your life.
Depending on the severity of the anger disorder, you may have many different options when it comes to the type and intensity of therapy you choose to take on. American and Australian psychiatric professionals are available to you through a wide range of platforms. You may have the ability to choose between in-person therapy sessions, online counseling, group therapy, or even going to a residential anger management treatment facility, depending on the severity of your anger and the effect it has on your life.
Antidepressants (SSRIs). Antidepressants help treat anger resulting from various mental disorders, including depression and personality disorders. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a popular type of antidepressant for these disorders. SSRIs increase serotonin levels in the brain by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin by neurons.

Mood Stabilizers (Lithium and anticonvulsants). In many cases, SSRIs are the first choice for treating issues for people with IED or anger in patients with depression and personality disorders because they are proven to be effective. In cases where patients' anger issues don't respond to SSRIs, other medications such as mood stabilizers that address symptoms like racing thoughts are also an option. Some anti-seizure medications work as mood stabilizers (such as carbamazepine and Divalproex).

Of course, this treatment can be ignored by alternatively staying away from us here at the forum, like the peaceful few months where you were absent.  It was a nice time we had, and you were not missed for 1 second.
Bye Bye!

Facebook messenger is fine, but my email can be found by clicking on my "Houdini" pic on the left.
I believe the link works.  The Neanderthal below seems to have issues with my not putting my email address in the For Sale blog, but the link should be there, and this is not cause to go out like a wild dingo with a thorn in its paw.
I am a little reluctant to put my email address out on a forum, so I skipped doing that.
I am easy to find.

I am sure he will be happy with these.
If he is the one that you described previously, it seems that they are going to a good home.
I assume that you received MANY inquiries on your pair because I had offers from all over the world for this one.
I regret that I could not accommodate all offers.
