US Bean v Hiatt Bean LI

Recently got a nice set of Bean Legirons so can now compare them with the Hiatt Legirons.
Originally I had thought that Hiatt simply imported them from the US and put their name on them. Having second thoughts about it now:

The US weigh 747g Hiatt 737g
Length US 56.5cm Hiatt 57.5cm
No of links US 10 Hiatt 14
The keyways slightly different and the US key does not open the Hiatt. The US lockcase is very slightly thicker and the way the side cover plate is put in is different.

My problem is that I can not compare other US Legirons and do not know whether there were slight design changes. Can anyone who has a set of them measure their weight and do they all have 10 links?

I do not own a scale but my Bean leg irons have twelve twisted links and a flat oval on each end for a total of fourteen.

My set of Bean Leg Irons are the same as Spencers. 12 chain links with 2 ovals on the ends for a total of 14. I do not own an accurate scale either. So, im not able to get you a weight on my set. My apologies.

Gordon, you never cease to amaze me with what you have! The photo you sent appears to be a Lovell Legiron did not know they existed!
Do you have a common Bean type LI?

           Boy is my face red. I grabbed the wrong leg-iron by mistake. yes I do have a common Bean leg-iron.
 It has 12 twisted links and 2 oval links.
 Do not forget, some of my rare stuff was once yours.

So the Hiatt/Bean leg iron is another rare example of Hiatts experimentation with American handcuffs, leg irons and nippers. The American products were adjustable and precision-made, whilst most early English products were not apart from the adjustable darby of 1885 which had a bow like a Tower cuff. Were the English unwilling to change, stuck with an old fashioned workforce and processes, waiting for new technology to make it cheaper and easier??? They must have marvelled at the number of beautifully made designs coming out of the US.
