Anyone tried to stain or recolor handcuffs?

I like Yuil thumbcuffs but prefer them in black which is not offered.. so I started thinking if you can stain wood and you can stain fabric well can you stain metal handcuffs?

Obviously you don't want to use spray paint because I imagine it would interfere with the internals but something like a thinner stain might work?

Have you looked into "gun blue"?

No but I will check it out

Yuil thumbcuffs  are made of stainless steel, so the standard bluing may not work properly.

I wonder what actual color options exist besides blue/black to stain metal I'll have to research it more 

I have a red pair of Peerless chain handcuffs which I skuffed up while gimmicking them and filling in the double lock hole. I bought some red acrylic paint to try and put the red back on. I chose an absolutely perfect colour red (DecoArt AMERICANA "Primary Red") but it is not hard wearing and I ended up purposefuilly rubbing it off because I don't want to get red on any clothing and stain them :(. I was hoping it would be a nice hard finish but it wasn't. I was hoping for a similar ruggedness as a car's paint job.

Have you explored Powder Coating?  
The Eastwood Company has equipment and materials geared toward the hobbyist or DYI folks.

Maybe more than you were expecting to pay but once you've had experience with powder coated items you'll never go back to paint. You'll find other uses for it other than an occasional pair of cuffs

There are several prodcucts on the market. Recently a package of handcuffs were soaked in water under the transport. Two of them had an original black
finish to them. I cleaned them up and used Birchwood Perma Blue with a very good result. See pictures.

Thats correct! Blueing doesn't ork on stainless steel.
