#1UK tax is VAT. 20%???
Australia has 10% GST on imported goods over $1000 I think - the threshold may have changed? But ebay seem to charge GST on small items.
What other counties have taxes on imports and how much?

#4In Germany, it's complicated. How else could it be. Up to 2010 or so, small packages or padded envelopes often used to go through without any hassle. Not anymore.
If the value (including shipping costs!) is under 150 Euros, you just pay the VAT (normally 19%). Everything over €150 value, some 10% import duties go on top of that. So you're often looking at an additional almost 30% plus often already expensive shipping costs from overseas. If it's a small item (like a door hinge or something you ordered in China), the German post will nowadays often collect a standard import duties of €5,50 or so from you and give that to Uncle Karl. That service will only cost you another €6 (so you're suddenly paying €11,50.-), and you have to pick up your package from the post office - because the mail men "do not carry cash or card readers". Labeling an item as a "gift" will not fly; they always want a receipt, or they'll just estimate a value. Co-worker got a $10 calendar from her sister in Australia for her birthday, and she had to pay said €11,50. So, yes, the fees are high, and the service is bad. I guess they want us to buy local.
By the way, to correct way to designate handcuffs for customs is supposedly "locks, metal (unprecious)", so they can figure the proper rate.
You do not have to pay taxes (9% or more) if the item is over 100 years old, so it may make sense to provide the patent papers (Yossie has most on his website). I've done that a few times.
