Alex Nichols

Just heard the sad news from Sheila that Alex passed away last night in hospital following a fall that broke his hip. He was 93 and unfortunately they could not save him.
He has been a very good friend of mine for over 50 years and I am sure many of you have copies of his books. He will be sadly missed by our community but his name will live on for ever.

So sorry to hear the bad news.  Alex made a great contribution to the collection community with the publication of his books.  I have found them a great resource over the past years.

I had the opportunity to meet Alex a few times at the European conventions. A true gentleman who contributed to the community with great books!

This is a huge loss for the handcuff community in general. So sorry to hear of the loss of Alex Nichols. I was never able to meet him, but I do use his books quite often. My thought and prayers are for peace to be with his friends and family, during this time of need and of grief. R.I.P., Alex.

Some of the first advice I got when I started collecting was to get a set of his books. It is one of his legacies that has proven invaluable! 

We are all very fortunate that Alex published his books, and shared his knowledge. I am sorry to hear of his passing.

Alex was above all a gentleman.  Very kind and always sharing.  I has the opportunity to spend a weekend in his cottage many years ago.  I did not get much sleep. We stayed up all night talking and looking over his collection.

I happened to be there on the day he received the first printed copies of the second volume of his book.  Boy was he excited. But then disappointed because the printer had messed up the color pages.  

I will miss him.

I never met him or wrote to him before the day this pic was taken.
We took a liking to each other at the Euro Convention 2010 and this pic was taken within 3 minutes of meeting him.

A SUPER guy who will be missed!

So sad - Alex was a great guy, and as has already been said .....a gentleman. I've known him for almost half a century (yes, nearly 50 years!!!), thanks to an introduction by Chris Gower all that time ago.

We became great friends and met often - he was always happy to share his knowledge and his connections. Never a cross word from him, although on one occasion I did point out to him that he "had an opinion on everything, even when he was wrong!" Those of you who knew him well might imagine his response - a calm, wry smile - for once he was speechless!

I felt very privileged when he asked me to help with copyreading for the first volume of his book (he kindly gave me an acknowledgement in that first volume). During the course of that copyreading it was the only occasion when we ever had disagreements ..... facts, grammar, spelling, presentation, attribution of photos ..... it went on and on but there was never a seriously cross word between us over all that. I suppose it goes without saying that Alex always did what he wanted to do but it was a great feeling of satisfaction when his first edition rolled off the presses.

I'll always treasure my signed copy of his first volume.

We'll all miss you my dear friend.
