“Update” S&W Handcuff History

As promised, I said I would post any new findings that come along after the publication of my 2-book series of Smith & Wesson Handcuff History. I just didn’t expect a new finding so soon, but here it is, a rare Peerless Model 1 Version 2 with a 2-link chain joining the two cuffs together.

The Peerless Model 1 Version 2 handcuff was the last of the “Single Elongated” chain link joining the right & left hand cuffs together and also the last to have, MFGD. BY SMITH & WESSON stamped on them. The Version 2 was also the first to have the Peerless logo stamped on them. The word TRADE was stamped above the logo and the word MARK was stamped below the logo. You can see an example of this in my book set, Smith & Wesson Handcuff History Volume 1.
What is unique about this example of the Peerless Model 1 Version 2, is that it has the Model 1 Version 3, short 2-Link chain joining the right & left hand cuffs together. The 2-Link chain was not introduced until 1917 also noted in Volume 1 in the Peerless Handcuff Manufactured by Smith & Wesson parts list, operation & parts price list dated March 1917, and a August 1917 advertisement showing the New Model with Two short Twisted links in place of the one elongated link. These are also shown in Volume 1 of my 2 volume set of Smith & Wesson Handcuff History.
This is the first example of a Peerless Model 1 Version 2 that I have seen with the 2-Link chain joining the cuffs together. I wish I would have had these prior to publishing my book so they could have been included in the text.

The rivets are a little strange

I don’t think they were completely polished before the plating process. These could have been a “lunch box” set, (carried out by an employee). Passing quality control would have been a problem.
Here is a unfinished example of a Model 2 Version 1 that does not have locks installed and no plating.

Here is a comparison of the two Model 1 Version 2 examples with the 2-link chain version being rare in my opinion.
