#1This is the most common type of Finnish made leg irons. Used in all old Finnish prisons and almost in every Police Districts.
The full set consist of 7 pieces. 2 leather covered, hinged cuffs, 2 square metal washers for securing cuffs, 2 metal chains and one metal bar for attaching chains together.
Locked with padlock, originally Björkboda padlocks, later Abloy padlocks were widely used. Connectin bar is with two holes, other for securing (locking) and other was usually
for metal or rope lenk which allowed chained to support the chain and made moving a little bit easier. And also it was possible to join eg. handcuff set by using that other hole.
There is no single manufacturer for these legsirons. One metal factory made on part, other something else. Eg. at least four different chain types are used, surely
Dalsbruk (Taalintehtaan ruukki) factory and Fiskars were chain manufacturer, probably Mariefors Bruk (Kellokoski) made chains too. Part of Dalsbruk factory chains are
hallmarked on lenk with factory hallmark DB with crown. Commonly no manufactures hallmarks exist.
For sure at least following manufacturers made parts for this leg iron model. Dalsbruk factory (Taalintehtaan ruukki), Fiskars factory (Fiskarsin ruukki), Mariefors Factory (Kellokosken Ruukki) and Billnäs Factory (Billnäsin ruukki). And ofcourse lock manufacturer Björkboda was natural choice for first padlocks, because Dalsbruk Factory and Björkboda Factory were located closely in small island and they co-operated widely and those two has same owners.
Björkboda Factory manufactured also Prison padlocks, cell door locks.
Here is photoes of full leg iron set, manufactured about 1910-1920. This set has been used in Ilomantsi Police District. Third photo is not from this set, it is photo of Dalsbruk Bruka (Factory) hallmark in similar leg iron chain.
