Variations of the Phillips Police Nipper

W. Grey Phillips of Brooklyn, New York submitted his Patent Application on February 12, 1869 and was granted on August 10, 1869.  The patent papers shows a sketch of the nipper showing a straight handle and a spring locking system with one peg that drops into one hole.

There are two models that I know of.  The first is all brass, not plated and heavy.  The only marking is the number "4" on the top edge of the handle.  The second is lighter in weight, plated and is marked "PAT APPLD FOR" on the outside below the handle.  

I think the brass nipper may be a development model and the number four could mean the fourth one made or the fourth model.  Since the patent was granted in only a few months, I would think there would not be a lot of PAT APPLD FOR models produced.

The next variations are in the actual production model.  The design of the handle is its form fitting to the hand.  The locking spring drops into three available locking slots allowing some adjustment for wrist size.  There is a light and heavy model and all are plated.  There are also some changed in the design of the handle.
 


If anyone has the early pre-patent model, please check if it has a number on the handle.  Hope this was informative.

Ron,  I now have the two 1st model Phillips that you have.
I was excited that the Forte auction description stated that the round thicker or heavier version was steel, but a magnet does not stick. 
Plated brass is my guess. 
I was hoping for one of each material, but 2 variations are nice to have!
Neither of these have any markings, except the flat or thin model has a "P" on the inside flat spot.
