#1Among the items I wanted most from the Forte auction was this John J. Murphy Nipper.
It was in excellent shape coupled with extreme rarity. Forte wrote that he believes that this is the only one known to exist.
I believe there must have been a few made as the finish is too nice to be a patent model or other demonstration purpose.
This was his 1st Model Patent which was issued on July 20, 1915. This model was listed simply as "Police Nippers"
Almost a year later, he patented a slightly different version utilizing a chain instead of the bar.
He labeled this as "Combined Police Nipper and Twister".
I noticed that he differentiates the terms "Nipper" from "Twister" and I hope to explore the differences. I thought the terms were just used interchangeably.
It is possible that his 2nd patent model was created, but it is not known to exist anywhere that I know of.
I hope to find out more about Murphy soon. In his patent papers he indicated that he resided in Norwich Connecticut.
Unfortunately, there are many John J. Murphy's on the internet, so finding him will be challenging.
