New (old) S&W cuffs for my collection...

Bought these off eBay, just got them today.

This is the oldest set I have so far.

They have the telltale 'ditch dimple' location. They also have a five-digit serial number instead of the six on all of my other S&W cuffs.

Something else that I noticed is that the cuffs have a different profile than any of the newer Model 90 handcuffs that I have. While the same thickness, they are wider in some areas and narrower in others.

Even though they would appear heavier at a casual glance, they are actually one-half ounce lighter than a 'modern' M-90.

As long as you are happy, that's all that counts! LOL! I started my collection with a pair of S&W model 71's. I still have them and they are still in fine shape dispite what they have been through! Oh the life of an escape artist! Have fun with them. Mike

Model 71? I'm not familiar with those, can you tell me more about them?

Well terry just to let you know you are the proud owner of the first smith & wesson model 90s..They are not model 71 i have been collecting for years and have every thing smith & wesson have to offer (except model 210 and model 94 leg irons)never heard of this model ..I am sure if you ask the older collectors they will agree with me ...they do look nice all cleaned up!! Nice find..

Sorry about that its not a leg iron its the model 94 long chain...lost my head for a min..lol..i have the smith & wesson 104 long chain and the 104 hinged..they were hard enough to get ...now still looking for the model 210 and the 94 long chain..

Hi, I got the old S&W cuffs out and looked them over. All I can tell you about them is that they look almost identical to the cuffs in the above picture except that mine have the number 71 stamped on them just to the upper right of the S&W trade mark. I had another pair with the number 90 stamped in the same exact place, I always thought that this was the model number. The serial number is on the back of this same cuff, and it is a six diget number. Both of the S&W cuffs look as though they had the 71 and 90 stamped on them from the company. Any thoughts? Mike

Michael: There is no such thing as a S&W model #71. #91-yes, #71-no.

George-you might have more luck locating a #94 belly-chain (with cuffs separated)...and then cutting off the excess chain..resulting in a "long-chain #94 cuff.

I might be able to make one if I knew how long you want the chain, as soon as I get my TIG welder set up and working. I have several pairs of 94's that I could modify...

Dorson that would be great..i also need a couple more pairs of model 94 some of mine the tripple bar paw inside has one bar that is not so good ...there is 3 models of this cuff let me now...just send me an email.....thanks

Remember there were three different versions of the S&W Model 94, with a possibility of 16 different total key combinations, 4 pins to 2 positions each.

The most common was a cuff with an "A" stamped on the single bow, this one uses the "N" key.

This should be further explained in Stan's Handcuff CD.

I think the Fed's used "D", the "A" was the most common or sold over the counter key combination and is the one most encountered.

I think Ian has a four sided key (tool) which has all 16 possible combinations accessable.
