LTH / TKS Handcuffs

As many of you are aware our colleague Escapologist/Entertainer/Handcuff collector Pete McCahon died in December last year. I was priviledged enough to catalogue his collection before it was sold at the Magic Circle London at the end of May. I had known Pete for over 15 years and as many of you know he was a larger than life character. Anyway, basically his collection had about 140 items several of which are illustrated in Alex Nichols Book Volume One. The initial thoughts were to auction the collection but between Ian Vallance, Graham Reed and myself we decided to put a value on the items and put them on tables whose prices ranged from £5- to over £100-
Difficult decisions on pricing, but at the end I decided to place reasonable prices on many of them (yes they would have fetched more on ebay)however I am sure Pete would have agreed with my logic - if it sparked an interest in 4 potential performers / collectors that has to be what Pete would have wanted.
Anyway I digress, I decided to buy 3 items from the collection - not because the value I placed on them was low but because two of them are wrongly shown in Alex's book (and the 3rd is a handcuff that Pete got from Verner Reutler when he visited South Africa - more on this latter). One item wrongly shown in Alex's book is the LTH (LaTrobe handcuffs). See page 65 fig.2. The illustration shows a set of La Trobe handcuffs with the black plastic superglued in place. In fact these are marked TKS - I have just spoken to Alex and he will be phoning Peter LaTrobe tonight to confirm that no LTH handcuffs were issued with this plastic insert.

1) Original LTH handcuffs with serial number 006364 bought by me directly from Peter LaTrobe
2) TKS model as shown in Alex book marked TKS serial number 100680 with the super glued insert. Note the key is marked LTH!!!
3) TKS handcuffs serial number 113070 bought directly from TKS.
I noted on Stan's updated disc - wonderful no collector should be without a copy that he has the TKS model with the black insert. I would be very interested on finding out the serial numbers on any one who has either LTH or TKS handcuffs in their collection.

Congrats on getting a few items from Pete's collection. Had I known I would have tried to get something as well.

Chris, please excuse me for going off subject, but I am wondering if there was a hard copy catalogue from the sale or even a list that can be downloaded.
If not, can we learn of some of the rare items or nice cuffs that were sold?
I assume that everything has been sold, but I would really appreciate knowing what his collection consisted of.

the box and instructions, the serial numbers are clear on the box if you

I have noticed a variation in the TKS cuffs. Neither one in my collection has the black glued on piece. They both have the grey pot metal tabs.
The first one has serial # 103978 and the swinging bow is solid simlar to a Peerless or most other swing through cuffs. The serial # is stamped on the cuff body and only on 1 side of the cuffs. This cuff has the stubby key with no markings


The second one, serial # 22963 has a groove running down the bow and bisects the ratchet teeth. Down in the cuff body and between the ratchet is a raised divider to protect against a shim tool. One would need a forked shim similar to the one needed for shimming open the Bean cuffs. The serial number is stamped on both bows and on the box. The keys are more circular in shape and have no markings.


The LTH cuffs have a serial number of 006548 and it also appears on the box. The serial number is stamped on the cuff body on 1 side only. It does not have the pot metal doublelock protector like the TKS. The key is the stubby version and is marked LTH. Like my first TKS, it has the 2 ratchets but the bow is solid.

I hope this is still of interest for you, as your original post was some weeks ago, but today I had to go through some of my boxes where I keep my stuff in and I can give you the following information on the TKS cuffs I have.


No. 102985 plastic inserts, serial number on the lockcase
No. 21375 metal blocks near the d/l buttons, serial number on the bows,
the lockcases and stationary bows are black
No. 103257 Model 1 handcuffs without plastic or metal insert, serial
number on the lockcase
