Peerless Model 600 handcuffs

Hi folks,

I just acquired a set of Peerless model 600 handcuffs from a gentleman on eBay. I was completely unaware that there was a 600 line, but these do look just like the model 700's with the spun rivets, except the narrow part of the keyholes point downward into the cuffs, and the serial number (395960) is located above the keyhole between the two rivets nearest the chain. They came with 2 Peerless keys but no box, and look like new. I sent Joe a picture to post if he sees fit. Any information about these would be appreciated. I've search the internet for any information about this model, and cannot find anything.

Yes, in fact I just sent them a message a few minutes ago. I had forgotten that they are open to questions about the age of their cuffs. Since it's so close to 5:00 EDT in the USA, I probably won't get an answer until next Tuesday or Wednesday. I'll let you know what I find out.

They must be working late tonight at Peerless. I just got an answer from them about the model 600 handcuffs. Here it is:

"What you have is a prototype handcuff."

"A very small number of “Model 600” handcuffs were manufactured by Peerless. The Model 600 handcuffs had key holes oriented down/up and marked with “Model 600”. It was made to the same specifications as our other NIJ approved cuffs but was never tested. The series was never put into production so you would not find it on ours or any other website."

"If you are a collector it is a good find. Congratulations."

He offered to exchange them for a 700 set if I were a law enforcement official. NO WAY! I sent him another email to see if he can find out for me exactly how many were made (how rare they are). Hopefully he can tell me.

IMHO Peerless should have stayed with this design and position of the keyway.

On the other Peerless models, 300, 400, 500, etc, the "bit" slot on the keyway is located right above the double lock bar in the mechanism.

What this means is that anyone trying to first pick off the double lock with say a small bent wire, would only have to insert it and turn downwards towards the swivel area of the cuff.

With the position of the keyway on these unusual model 600's, one cannot do this via the bit section of the keyhole. I instead, one must go around the keypost to get at the double lock bar. This means that whatever a person is using to try and compromise or pick the lock must be thin enough to work between the edge of the key post and the edge of the keyway.

I think not using this design or mass producing it was a mistake.

Sure, the model 600 keyhole position does not improve the security of the cuff much, but it does help a little bit.

I cannot say for certain why Peerless abandoned this model, but it may have something to do with the fact that some officers either neglect or forget to double lock handcuffs.

With the new position of the keyway on the model 600's, it would be just as easy to pick off the single lock on the cuff as it would to pick off the double lock on the models with the old keyhole configuration.

Hi Steve,

I agree that it would be harder to disengage the double lock with this design. Who knows why they went back to the old keyhole design. If these are not double locked, it will be easy to pick them open. It doesn't take much turn of the key, only about 75 degrees. To release the double lock the key has to be turned far more than that, as you know. As you said, maybe it has to do with officers forgetting to double lock the cuffs.

I'm wondering if some of you good experienced collectors would give me your opinion as to what these cuffs might be worth? I'd like to get some idea of a possible value, or maybe a price range. I don't know that I would want to sell them, but it would be nice just to have some idea of their value, if possible. I sure would appreciate your opinions.

Why dose my name get brought into this. I post a commit and guys get made and copy my James, then I change it to JDB under the advice of another guy on this site and that gets used. I make a mistake typing, and here comes Webster's commits. Some guy writes the message above and James gets brought up in a following post.

I had commits posted about stainless Steal for over three weeks, just because I said magnets will stick to some stainless steal. I have made a few friends off this site and learned quite a bit, (from the guys that play nice in the sand box) but beyond that this site is no longer worth it.

This will probably be my last posting, it seems real clear to me that someone dose not want me on this site. I will do all of my communication through email with the few guys on this site that has made it enjoyable for me to learn new things about collecting handcuffs.

I don't know a lot, but I have gone out of my way to answer questions that others have too, like yesterday when the gentleman asked for pictures of the key for H&R handcuffs. I went took mine out, took pictures, loaded them on my computer, tried to get them posted, failed, tried again, failed. Then got them in an email and sent them to him. I didn’t have to do all that, but I though that is what this site was all about sharing information about handcuffs.

I ask questions about prices and someone makes a posting about me being mad because I got out bid, when all I was doing was trying to understand why certain cuffs bring higher prices than others.

Anyway, just forget it.

This forum would be much more secure if it would need registaration to post topics, something like php BB forum. In the current situation you never can have certainty if the person is the real user or imposter.
