Best handcuffs for police officer

Hello I am a future police officer and I must carry 1 pair of handcuffs. I have already 2 pair of handcuffs:

ASP Yellow (new version with yellow double lock)(http://www.handcuffwarehouse.com/asptaha.html) and

Chicago 1100 Chain (http://www.handcuffwarehouse.com/chmo11ststha.html).

My question is which handcuffs is the best because I know that Chicago 1100 is not approved N.I.J. but it are difficult A to open without key (for a beginner) and the ASP Yellow (yellow double lock) is very very easy A to open same for a beginner if it double locked but it are approved N.I.J. Please help me !!!

Hi

I would say take a peerless 801 or a smith & wesson 300 or 1 hinged
this cuffs are much beter
and with hinged cuffs is it more difficult to escape from
here in holland we use lips hinged cuff and we place the hands up each other
one from the left in the cuff and one from the right in the cuff
so the cuffs are standing

I will try to make this one short. First, carry two pair of cuffs on your duty belt, if the Dept. allows it. The old phrase "If you need one, you will probably need two" goes for your cuffs as well as sidearm. Carry a back-up gun. Always.
The cuffs you carry will be a matter of personal preference, as there are a lot of great quaility cuffs that are NIJ approved. I recommend highly carrying one pair of hinge, I prefer the Peerless because the fit bigger wrists, and one pair of chain. The double locking function should be the same on both, as Hiatt and Peerless use the push pin type, Smith & Wesson and ASP use the slide lock. I am seeing a lot of Officers in this area using the new ASP cuffs and they are a great improvement in speed of application. They are even faster than the discussed backloading feature of Hiatts and a few others. If you cuff and search properly, they are a good choice in my opinion, based on street use.
Stay away from the non NIJ approved brands. The NIJ criteria is painfully weak in some areas, and a cuff that cannot pass these tests has no place on your gun belt. Cuffs made by Peerless, Hiatt, Smith & Wesson, and the old American Handcuff Company are all top of the line, and everyone here has their own favorite and preference. Look around, talk to some guys with hashmarks halfway up the sleeve and gray in the hair, and listen to what they say. Take this advice and get your hands on as many different types as you can, and see what works for you. Hope that helps.

Hi

I would say don't take the asp cuffs
they have the NIJ app. but with a simple needle you can open them in a few
seconds even when they are doubble locked and when you are cuffed
even in the back

I like Hiatts. Never had any problem with them. I carry one hinged & one chain set.

Hello,

if I were a policeman I would carry at two pairs of RALKEM handcuffs or one pair of RALKEM and one pair of PEERLESS, SMITH-WESSON or handcuffs made by AMERICAN HANDCUFFS CO or by HIATT. RIVOLIER handcuffs or CLEJUSO cuffs also great. But RALKEM are very massive, I think that hinged RALKEM 9922 or 9927 are more robust than PEERLESS and their hinge is from the constructor´s point of view better and stronger. They are double-pawled, each pawl has it´s spring and in addition double lock has it´s own independent spring. So I think that their failure is impossible. And one more advantage: they use special flat key, so even if the handcuffed person has a key for standard cuffs, is not able to open RALKEM with it.
Or the best solution is to use handcuffs which are used by The Prisoner Service of the Czech Republic.

Absolutely not RALKEM. These handcuffs comes from the 90s and were constructed and manufactured specially for the prisoner service. It has never been possible to buy them on the market, in fact I was unable to obtain them. I played floorball for several years and my fellow players were members of these troops, but they did not want to sell them to me. They were afraid of problems connected with this trade.
These cuffs are hinged, uses a double pawl with the plate of thin metal between and double lock of course. They are the only czech handcuffs which uses barrel key. As far as I know it is extremely difficult to escape from them and is probably impossible to destroy them by a human force.

Evidently you did not see my post of last week. I offered these cuffs on my web site, so they are Not impossible to get. I am selling them, but only have one left and it will take about 30 days to get more (IF I get them). They can be seen, with prices at

They use a gear type drive instead of a ratchet pawl.

IMHO the best hinged handcuffs for less then 100 US$ are Schutzmarke "Deutsche Polizei", nowadays made by Heinrich Hagge, Germany. Well, these cuffs are quite heavy and bulky, but they are very secure and fast to apply - with levers for quick double locking on the backsides. The swing-besides technique prevents bending of the stationary bows by force and the non standard key as well as the lever tumbler locks make them very difficult to pick. This is high police quality proved and improved for more than 80 years!

Thank you for your answer. In the Québec City Police Service, officer uses in majority Smith & Wesson Model 100 ( 71% ) and Peerless Model 300 ( 20% ) and Chicago or HWC ( 9% ). Some officer use HWC and Chicago same if it are not approved N.I.J.(except Chicago X-33). The Service de Police de la Ville de Québec in Canada we have 863 Officer (soon 864 with me) I asked has 4 old officer and they my known as that Smith & Wesson were what it liked more. I go bought 4 Smith & Wesson Handcuffs: Model 100P, 300P, Model 1 Chain and Model 1 Hinged. According to them I must absolutely avoid ASP Handcuffs they are not good Handcuffs. Thank you for your assistance

Hi,

I must agree that for ease of application, quick operation of the double lock with little hassles, pry proof frame, and a MUCH better degree of security as is afforded by it's 2 lever lock mechanism, I too would say Hagge is a far superior cuff to any, if not all, North American cuffs currently being made and circulated.

Hello,

That would be La Pegy, hands down (if not behind one's back) and (lock) case closed. A distant second would be Hiatt's 1960 Pattern.

It is important to keep one's priorities in correct order.

By all means visit Cuffsland.com, but pass on the hagged Hagge and go for the pretty Pegy or the handsome Hiatt.

Why obsess over technical issues when everyone one knows that looks can kill? Particularly good looks are fatal. You can't get more secure than that!
