Are these Hiatt Handcuffs??

First of all, these do not look like Hiatt cuffs; they look like imitation S&W cuffs. Second, if you read the Q&A on the e-bay page, this guy claims that they are on the Hiatt-Thompson web site......funny, I didn't see them. I did see yellow, red, and orange cuffs but not blue, green or purple. And one more point, notice that his cuffs have the bow painted.....Hiatt cuffs do not have painted bows. In my opinion, I do not think that these are Hiatt handcuffs. I would be interested to hear some opinions from some of our more experienced collectors. Mike

Information which I've learned since posting is that if you look on the Hiatt-Thompson US Website they do show this style handcuff. And if you click on the price list there is a reference to Model 1010 US which I believe is this CUFF with the redesigned body which is Marked H-Thompson USA and curiously looks like the HENRY Handcuff which has been recently introduced.

I wonder if Hiatt-Thompson US is producing this redesigned cuff for Henry such as American Munitions/Handcuff did for Federal Labs in the 1970's.

Hello all,
I had the opportunity to see a pair of these while visiting Handcuff Warehouse on one of my trips to Hampton Roads area. They indeed are sold by Hiatt-Thompson but not manufactured by them. From the construction it appears to be made in Asia like the Winchesters and Henry's, etc. I took a pair of Winchester's and held them side by side and they are almost identical stampings and assembly. The powder coating is not complete either as the tips of the bows are not painted.

I seen the tips of the bows in the photo and noticed that they were "missed" by the painter. My first thought was that they were hand painted by someone to pass them off as a collector's model or something. I wonder if they are designed that way. As far as these cuffs being a product of Hiatt but not manufactured by Hiatt....well, other companies do it, why not Hiatt? I have seen this trick done by a lot of big name lock companies in the past. For example, the American Lock Co. has a wonderful line of high quality locks, but some of them get a bit costly. Their solution???? Have cheap pieces of crap made in some Aisa sweat shop, have it shipped back to the States, and put it in an Americian Lock package! Even though it says American Lock on it, WE, the lock people, know better.....heck, they don't even try to hide it! Look on the box or even on the product itself.....it will proudly say "MADE IN CHINA" right on the bottom of the lock. It sounds like this might be what Hiatt has done here; took a $10.00 pair of Aisan cuffs and put their name on them to sell them for $30.00 more than they are worth. I think that I will stamp "Chubb" on a pair of "Valor" cuffs, paint them pink, and call them "Chubb model #441 Ladies Escort Cuffs" then sell them for $75.00 on e-bay.....sound about right? If you have not figured out that this is only a joke and that I have no such plans of doing such a dishonest and stupid thing yet, then please seek mental help now.....I'm not kidding, stop what you are doing and seek help now! I think Mike is correct, they were probly made in China and then Hiatt put there name on them... I think that it's a shame that this type of thing is being done with high quality brand name products! I always considered Hiatt one of the highest quality handcuffs available but now it looks like there joining the bandwagon in the name of the almighty dollar and putting there once very respected name on crap like that!!!! What a shame I'm very disappointed with Hiatt. I hope Smith & Wesson, Peerless, SAF LOK don't start doing this!

it looks like "home-made or very unprofessionaly made colour finish" because it is possible to see some colour strips on the rotating arm at the end of the ratchet. They were probably blued in closed position and owing to it some parts of rotating arms which were at that moment covered by cheek plates are not coloured. But it is only my opinion.

The Henry Repeating Arms handcuff is Stainless Steel and is made entirely in the USA. It has NO connection to Hiatt. Henry has been making Rifles in the US since about 1860.

I did e-mail Hiatt several days ago with links to both sets that are currently listed on e-bay asking just this question but haven't had a response yet. Looking at the pictures from the various sites, they do all seem to be identical. The only set I actually have in my collection at the moment are the Winchesters. They're marked with the Winchester logo on the keyhole side and with Tactical Steel's info on the opposite side (and "Made in Taiwan" on the box they came in). I'll post Hiatt's answer here if they do get back to me.

Your answer back should be: "One of the many collectors that keep you in business!!!" But this is only my opinion. I think that it is safe to say that pretty much everyone here owns at least one pair of their cuffs. Heaven forbid one of us should ask a simple question....how dare we!!! Mike

On the occasions I have written Hiatts, their responses were timely, courteous, forthright and informative. They have gone out of their way to be helpful more than once. I doubt I am a positive exception to a negative rule.

Perhaps with current issue handcuffs, knowing not so much an individual's identity but rather whether he is writing independently or on behalf of an institution or an agency does help Hiatts reply most properly.

With all due respect, Mike, I submit Hiatts hardly is dependent upon handcuff collectors to stay in business.

Jack, you are probably right, but I know that I own a heck of a lot more handcuffs than ANY cop that I know. And I don't even have a very big collection. Look at people like Lars, Atame, Yossie, or Stan.....if we didn't collect, we might put a hurt on their business. Just a thought. Mike
