The bottoms of the lockcase on Hiatt Darby handcuffs were sealed by hand by hammering in a plug. For a period of time in the early 20th century each individual workman in the Hiatt factory identified his work by stamping the cuff with a particular letter of the alphabet. Shown above are nine examples taken from my collection. If you have an example not shown, then reply to this message, even better post or email me a picture. I have nine letters, how many of the other seventeen were ever used?

I can add J, V, V V, A to the list as well as a Tick, one dot, two dots.
In the case of the tick, it was also used in the circular peening.

Do the initial stamps correlate with the pein mark shape? If they do, it indicates that the initial identifies the smith. If not, then they are probably inspection marks.

Here is the close-up photo of mine:



I will have to go through my collection and see if I have anymore cuffs with these letters on them.....I never paid much attention to them before.
